Here’s a list of all the places I recommend for buying gear or planning a trip. Some of the links in this post are affiliate links, which means I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you if you make a purchase. I only recommend products that I have used and believe in. Hiking and Travel Gear
Mountain Equipment Coop (MEC for short) is Canada’s largest (and best) outdoor retailer. They sell everything you’d ever need to go hiking and camping. Plus they are a cooperative and have a strong environmental and sustainability focus.
REI is the biggest outdoor gear store in the the USA with literally hundreds of stores and a REALLY extensive web catalog. They carry tons of backpacking and hiking gear from tons of different brands.
I’ve been buying hiking books and maps from Amazon.ca and Amazon.com for over a decade, but these days they sell pretty much everything including hiking gear and travel accessories. Often they have pretty amazing deals too!
If I’m looking to book a hotel anywhere in the world, I use Booking.com. They have lots of listings for pretty much any city (including remote ones like Kathmandu!) and often they have free cancellation so you can shop around.
If I’m going to be staying in a city for awhile, I often like to book an apartment or house on Airbnb. That way I can get a more authentic experience by staying in a local’s neighbourhood rather than a touristy area. Plus having a kitchen means I can make my own meals to save money.
If you’ve never used Airbnb before, sign up using my link and save up to $45 off your first stay!
